Green IT

Is Green ITonly a marketing ploy, or can it really be of real value?
This is the question that managers and companies are asking themselves all the time. Green ITis a concept that affects every step of the development process, from design, through manufacturing and implementation, with a goal of developing the highest energy efficiency with the lowest environmental impact. Despite advancements in miniaturization of components, the increased demand for computational output brings a huge energy requirement for IT.  In the past planning of data centers it was sufficient to provide hundreds of watts per, in today’s world Data Centers must take into account demands of several kilowatts per m2. This growth in energy demand is two-sided, with one dimension pushing the 10-kilowatt per m2 boundary, and the other seeing an increase in size of data centers themselves.
The demand for more computational power is beginning to include the IT industry among other large energy consumers, who have long already implemented energy management practices.
Similarly, the CO2 production associated with IT, whether in the production of electricity, hardware components or supporting infrastructure is growing as well.
Not to be forgotten are the ozone depleting substances used by IT for cooling components and even those arising from gases released during transportation.
The useful lifespan of hardware is getting shorter and the new “one time use, throw away” culture is only increasing the amount of waste material burdensome to the environment.

Now….to be or not to be green? That is the question when we want to dramatize a bit we can build it on the level of his predecessor „to be or not to be“. But perhaps in very near future it will not be dramatized, but the real fact resulting from production capacities in the energy requirements to reduce operating costs, legislative regulations and the environment.

And one of the tasks of management companies is also to be prepared for important issues.

Is this topic important? We will try to answer in our manager´s handbook. We are dealing with topics like reducing energy consumption, efficiency, reducing greenhouse gases, recycling, not because of significant savings in operating costs and legislative changes but also because of ourselves, our surroundings and our children….simply let´s be green.
