Data centers
Informatisation and electronization do not mean only that the services will be more available and faster, but also that they will depend not only on people who provided them till now. Availability and speed will highly dependent on availability, reliability and capacity of hardware and software components which are required to be functional during the day and night. We do not expect that this equipment will be located in an office where visitors will kick to them and in the evening a cleaner will plug them off.
These machines will require something special — data center, so a place which is a dream of every server. It will provide sufficient power, cold, space, high-speed network, protection and service. Monitoring systems will look after them and in case of necessity they will alarm operators prepared to go and “treat” them. Five star hotel for computers.
In this handbook we will lead you through an issue of a draft and implementation of data center. We will not provide you a proposal how to construct a data center, but we will give you recommendations what you should not forget from the moment, when you only speculate about its realisation. We consider a type of provided services, economy of operation and protection of investments. We were motivated by an endeavour to prevent damages which can arise due to thoughtless planning and implementation. At construction of a data center it is not important to focus only on the building construction, but always to remember the task that the data center and the information and communication technologies located in it are to fulfil — to provide services. A correct preparation and conceptual procedure is a key for construction of a safe, available and reliable environment of the whole information and communication technology.
There were the most professional authors with practical experience in design, implementation and operation of data centers in the Slovak Republic who participated in the handbook preparation. We believe that the handbook will help you to become familiar with this really live issue.
