You are holding the latest publication from the Manager’s Handbook series which loosely follows on from other titles published over the past few years – Business Continuity Management, User Authentication and Electronic Transaction Authorization, Management and Audit of Information Security, Business Intelligence, Strategy for Building Modern Company Telecommunications Solutions, Project Management, Business Continuity Planning, The Self Assessment Guide and Information Security Management.

The subject we have selected for this Handbook is generally well-known and often repeated but it is also a subject which is also widely discussed, frequently over-estimated and one which can lead to many errors and much disappointment.

So why did we choose this topic? We are living in a period of considerable change, where there is not enough time, but there are big opportunities and large challenges. Many of us are faced with the problem of how to fulfil our visions and dreams, the expectations of our bosses, how to adapt to changing conditions and how to actively influence these conditions so we can feel like winners. It is not just the people who work in informatics who often decide to specialise in a narrower field and therefore services are increasingly being purchased more often.

The gifted investor and the richest man on the planet, Warren Buffet, once said: “The price is what you pay, value is what you get.”

The objective for the authors of this Handbook was to consider how to ensure that the value which we buy is the best possible value; or perhaps a better description would be; how our expectations of the benefits which Outsourcing will bring are fulfilled as best and as precisely as possible.

It is up to you, the reader, to judge how well we have managed to fulfil these ambitions. We trust that this Handbook will be an inspiration for you and that it will assist you at your work.
